another running dream come true

When you hear the term "all-inclusive vacation," what do you think?

I've been on a few in my life and even worked a season on staff at Club Med in my twenties (fun fact!).

To me, "all-inclusive" is usually an over-promised, slight disappointment of trip with massive buffets, masses of kids, and awkward entertainment options. In exchange for everything being taken care of for you, you trade adventure and surprise.

And if you're a runner, especially a plant-based one, your options on both those fronts are bound to be limited.

So I decided to create the all-inclusive that I'd want to go on, the Asheville Running Retreat. This year was the second year and despite the chance of rain, we had beautiful weather and great people.

Here's what one runner, Patricia, said about it:

As a newer runner, I was a bit nervous about joining a retreat, but I was immediately welcomed by the community. It was inspiring to meet others at different points in their running journeys, and the retreat’s supportive atmosphere made it easy to connect and share goals. The sessions on nutrition, mental strength, strength training, and balance were especially beneficial for me, providing practical advice that I’ve already started incorporating into my routine. I loved the beautiful location with plenty of running options—especially the scenic trails during a group run. The food was delicious, and as someone who eats mostly plant-based, I really appreciated the thoughtful and nutritious meals. The retreat organizers and coaches were fantastic, creating a welcoming space where I felt comfortable asking questions and pushing myself. I would highly recommend this retreat to anyone looking to grow as a runner, no matter where they are in their journey.

If you've gotten this far, but are feeling like this is some kind of sales pitch, it's actually not.

I'm not sure I'll be doing the retreat next year.

It's not because I don't love it. I do.

It's honestly because I don't love marketing. (I'm a running coach, after all!)

I'd rather talk about it a few times a year and then only to the people who are really excited about possibly going.

So let's try this.

If you would love to go on a trip like this next September, click the button below so I can gauge real interest. There's no commitment to sign up for real, but it will let me know if there's enough runners to keep this amazing experience going!

Q:

My problem is feeling bored after a certain distance. How do I conquer that?

A:

Anything you do repetitively can get boring. Running, washing dishes, painting a fence, can all be pretty boring.

The trick is to summon your inner Tom Sawyer and convice yourself that it's fun.

If you have kids, what do you tell them when they say they are bored? 🤔

When you embrace your boredom as an opportunity instead of a drag, it can become a time for your mind to come alive.

Your run can become a time for:

  • letting your creativity flow
  • developing gratitude
  • building mental strength
  • getting perspective on what's really important to you
  • entertaining yourself to minimize discomfort with the power of your mind.

Once you discover that boredom is a choice and you truly can choose to never be bored again, there's almost no stopping what you can do.

In running and in life.

There's no shortage of advice out there on how to get good at running. From the overly simple ("just run more"), to the overly complicated ("train on a treadmill just below lactate threshold while getting your blood drawn and your VO2 Max measured"), it can feel a bit overwhelming if you are stuck in your running progress. The truth is there are some basic truths about how to train to improve at endurance running. Nail the basics consistently and you'll improve more than the vast majority of...

Want to Be Faster as a Master? Getting older is inevitable (if we're lucky). But that doesn't mean that you can't gain speed, muscle, and fitness as you age. Now, I'm not saying that the best runners in the world now will still be crossing the finish line first in their 80s. We all will lose our peak physical potential at some point. For those of us who were not elite athletes, we still have a long way to improve. But you can't train like you are twenty to get there... Learn More (5 min read)...
